During the last few years, we have had breeders from multiple States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Scotland and even a breeder from the Charolais region of France visit, and at some point would ask how the J Bar Stenberg Ranch herd was developed and why is the quality and look so consistent?

Joe Stenberg networked closely with Jerry Litton and the Kailer Ranches in Missouri and the Michaelis and Yates Ranches in Texas to form the foundation herd in the 1960’s. In 2013 Jarrod and Jerome located a tremendous Red Charolais Bull, Ranger 3A and his half sister Red Berry 319 who herself was linebred Red Rock on the Dam side. During the same period, we imported the best red females we could find from several breeders to include Pro-Char, one of which was the magnificent ProChar Maybelein. Jerome’s older brother Juel Stenberg, a life long Charolais producer, evaluated Ranger to exhaustion and concluded that Ranger had no faults. We decided to line breed Ranger to his sister Red Berry and the resulting calf, Red Berry 519 was incredible. 519 was mated back to Ranger resulting in 0519. During this same time a group of Ranger x Maybelien flush heifers were mated back to Ranger with incredible results. These resulting linebred females were again mated back to Ranger with each generation surpassing the previous in quality, performance and consistency. This scenario was repeated with other cow families. We now have a herd of heavily Ranger linebred females that we feel, are the best Red Charolais in the Breed. Our cattle are raised on range without creep feed, so we are able to truly evaluate genetic value rather than a grain-based program that can cover deficiencies with a layer of yield grade 4 fat.

Our Ranger linebreds possess an unequalled prepotent ability to breed “true”. Darvin Dykes, Spencer Crowther and the Stenberg’s own Stenberg Ranger 9519 as partners. This bull has gained a great deal of popularity with his ability to sire progeny with great performance and phenotype. 9519 is an example of a Ranger Linebred.

In our 56 years of breeding Charolais we have only identified one sire, Stenberg Ranger 3A with the incredible performance, phenotype and maternal traits we desire with no faults that allow us to steadily increase quality with each linebred generation. We line breed much closer than what would be considered normal because we can. Our cattle have only improved. When mated to outcross Charolais genetics, a maximum response is realized very similar to heterosis but also the positive traits are transferred to the resulting progeny at a greatly accelerated rate.

Consistency is paramount in the Seedstock business and the surest way to enhance consistency is through prepotent, linebred cattle of immense quality.
